How to choose a honey extractor
The right honey extractor depends on the size of your apiary and your frame type. Up to about 10 colonies, a manual tangential 3–4-frame extractor is usually enough. With 10–30 colonies, a radial 8–20-frame extractor with an electric motor pays for itself quickly, while large apiaries run self-turning cassette extractors and full extraction lines.
Tangential, radial or cassette extractor?
- Tangential extractor — the simplest and cheapest: combs sit flat against the drum wall, so only one side extracts at a time and the frames must be turned by hand.
- Radial extractor — frames are loaded like spokes of a wheel, both sides of the comb extract at once, making the work considerably faster.
- Self-turning cassette extractor — the cassettes flip themselves, so no manual frame turning at all. The choice of professional apiaries.
